Styles of Motorcycles – What they Actually Mean

There are a handful of basic styles of motorcycles to choose from – cruiser, street bike, touring, dual sport, dirt bike, and scooter – most are straightforward, but some require explanation. Choosing from the different styles of motorcycles can be confusing, there are so many options. By answering a few key questions you will be on the way to the right style for you.

Most major manufacturers make a cruiser along with their other models.

A street bike (a.k.a. crotch rocket) is a sleek, fast looking bike made for fun and speed. They have a very high pitched sound racing down the road.

The ‘touring’ style motorcycle is made to travel long distances and includes a ferring (wind reduction), windshield, and usually a luggage rack and/or saddle bags, among other accessories. Dual sport bikes are made for asphalt and off road and must have a headlight, blinkers, horn, license plate, and certain tires to be street legal.
NOTE: Check with your State DMV for requirements for street legal motorcycles.
Dirt bikes (motocross) are designed for off road riding exclusively and are the main style used for racing.

Scooters can have small (50cc) or large (250cc) engines, may not require a full license, and can get 100 miles per gallon or better saving big time on gas.

With all the styles of motorcycles to choose from, which one is right for you? Ask yourself these two questions and you will be ready to decide:

1. What do I want to do? Whether you are looking for speedlooksracingtravel, or fuel economy, determining the main use of your motorcycle will go a long way in choosing a style.

2. How much do I want to spend? Custom choppers can run upwards of GBP 20,000, or you can buy a scooter for under GBP 300. Budget is a major factor in your choice.
With your price range in mind and knowing what you want to do on your bike, you will have the information necessary to choose from the dozens of styles of motorcycles.

Having the answers does not mean your decision will be an easy one. Buying a bike, especially your first, is not a task to be taken lightly as you are most likely spending a good chunk of your hard earned cash. With a little research you will be ready to ride in no time!
